Patrick Stevedores Knuckle Expansion, Port Botany
Patrick Stevedores and Sydney Ports Corporation signed a new lease and development agreements for the expansion of Patrick’s Port Botany Container Terminal in May 2012.
As proposed Patrick increased its footprint at Port Botany by 39 percent through the development of an integrated Container Terminal which comprises both its existing container terminal and the adjoining 17.6 hectare site, called the Knuckle.
The new terminal will be designed to balance capacity across the quay line, the container stacking yard and the landside interface. Plans for the new terminal will increase Patrick’s capacity from 1.15 to 1.6 million TEUs per annum and include an expansion of quay line to 1400m, with four berths capable of accommodating the new panamax vessels.
Sydney Ports Corporation granted a new long term lease for the combined site comprising of the existing Patrick Container Terminal and the Knuckle, extending the lease term to the end of June 2043.
Following development approval Patrick Stevedores appointed Gillon Consulting Group for the hydraulic design component of the project. Gillon Consulting had a wealth of experience in relation to such developments and had previously been engaged by Patrick for the Fremantle and Brisbane terminals.
Drawing on their experience on past developments Gillon Consulting specified two Ecosol 41800 Stormwater Quality Improvement Devices (SQID’s). These devices were specifically chosen for their conformity to the Botany Bay Water Quality Improvement Program Guidelines and that of the numerous other stakeholders and authorities including, NSW Department of Planning & Infrastructure, NSW Office of Environment & Heritage, Department of Primary Industries and NSW Maritime.
The inclusion of the Ecosol 41800 SQIDS was a proven case of best practice management as in close consultation with the awarded contractor McConnell Dowel Constructors (Aust) Pty Ltd, Ecosol Pty Ltd successfully designed and manufactured every component ready for delivery well ahead of the supply contract deadlines.
The components were manufactured at Ecosol’s manufacturing facility in Pooraka, South Australia. When required each component was systematically shipped for immediate installation on site adhering to all site protocol and WHS requirements implemented by McConnell Dowell. Killard Excavations Pty Ltd was appointed by McConnell Dowell for the bulk excavation and assembly of the two devices. The assembly of these two enormous devices was carried out in record time with no notable product related delays. The installation was carried out under the on-site consultative support of an Ecosol field representative. Without the inclusion of project related stoppages each device was assembled within eight days
Ecosol’s scope of works included:
- Model SQID performance using MUSIC
- Design, manufacture and delivery of each device
- On site consultative support for the assembly of each unit
Product Description
The specified product was the Ecosol GPT 41800 a pre-cast panelled unit with the assembled dimensions of L 12.630m x W 4.600m x H 7.480m. This unit is one of the largest proprietary devices of its kind manufactured in Australia. Due to the size of the devices for logistic reasons the units were manufactured as pre-cast panels, the thirty components for each singular device were then shipped to site for assembly.
The units had been proposed to capture gross pollutants, hydrocabons and fine particulate matter in accordance to the aforementioned guidelines. The Ecosol SQIDS was situated at the southern end of the catchment. The trunk drainage consisted of a 1800mm RCP upstream of the 3000W x 1200H culvert.at the inlet of the Ecosol SQID. The outlet configuration was a 3900Wx 1200H culvert that exited through the seawall via a tide actuation controlled gate.
Conclusion
By mid-2014 the Port Botany Container Terminal will undergo a transformation as they expand and develop it into a world-class, internationally competitive facility using Autostrade technology
